Description
This decadent Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast combines the creamy, caramelized topping of crème brûlée with the warm, custardy texture of French toast. Perfect for special occasions or weekend brunches, this make-ahead dish ensures minimal effort in the morning!
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread, sliced 1-inch thick
- 5 large eggs
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for topping)
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cubed
- Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the dish: Generously butter a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the French bread slices in a single layer, slightly overlapping if needed.
2️⃣ Make the custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
3️⃣ Soak the bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring every slice is well-soaked. Use the back of a spoon to gently press the bread down if needed.
4️⃣ Refrigerate overnight: Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard fully.
5️⃣ Bake: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator and discard the plastic wrap. Dot the top of the bread with small pieces of butter and sprinkle a light layer of sugar over it.
6️⃣ Caramelize: Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the French toast is golden brown, puffed, and slightly set in the center. Remove from the oven and let cool for about 5 minutes.
7️⃣ Add the brûlée topping: Sprinkle additional sugar evenly over the top of the baked French toast. Use a kitchen torch or the oven’s broiler to caramelize the sugar until golden and crackling.
8️⃣ Serve: Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup and enjoy the perfect blend of creamy, crispy, and sweet flavors!
Notes
- For an extra rich flavor, substitute heavy cream for the half-and-half.
- If you don’t have a kitchen torch, the broiler works just as well—just keep an eye on it to avoid burning.
- Add a touch of orange zest or almond extract for a unique twist.
