Ingredients
For the Patty Melts:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 6 slices rye bread
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6 slices cheddar cheese
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 6 tbsp butter, softened
For the Secret Sauce:
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp chopped turkey bacon pieces
- 3 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp relish
Instructions
1️⃣ Form the Patties:
Divide the ground beef into three equal portions and shape into patties slightly larger than the rye bread slices.
2️⃣ Season the Patties:
Season both sides of each patty with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
3️⃣ Cook the Patties:
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Set aside.
4️⃣ Prepare the Secret Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, chopped turkey bacon, ketchup, sugar, and relish. Stir until smooth and set aside.
5️⃣ Butter the Bread:
Spread softened butter on one side of each rye bread slice.
6️⃣ Assemble the Patty Melts:
Place three slices of buttered bread (buttered side down) in a skillet. Layer each with:
Two slices of provolone cheese
A cooked beef patty
Two slices of cheddar cheese
Spread secret sauce on the non-buttered side of the remaining three bread slices and place them on top of the sandwiches, sauce-side down.
7️⃣ Toast the Patty Melts:
Cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until the bottom bread is golden brown and the provolone cheese has started to melt.
8️⃣ Flip and Finish Cooking:
Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the cheddar cheese melts and the bread is golden and crispy.
9️⃣ Serve:
Allow the patty melts to cool slightly before slicing them in half. Serve with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
- Use a cast iron skillet for an even sear and perfectly crispy bread.
- Swap cheddar or provolone for other cheeses like Swiss or pepper jack for a twist.
- Double the secret sauce recipe for dipping or to drizzle on fries.
